Battle scene, mounted officer leading troops, others
flying in the distance. Bronze, fine. 14
This is one of the rarest of the West Virginia Soldiers’ Medals. At
the Parmelee Sale, June 1873, (No. 75,) one of a more common variety
sold for $11.75; one at the Stenz Sale, 1875, (No. 1455,) for $12.00, and
one at Fewsmith’s Sale for a similar price. This is apparently the third
kind, of those provided for by the State Resolution, for officers and
soldiers dying from wounds received in battle; it has not before been
described, and is so far as I know the first yet offered at auction. See
Journal of Numismatics, Vol. X, p. 79, and XI. p. 96.
